Folic Acid Folate

Folic acid, also known as folate, is a form of the vitamin B12. There are many benefits of folic acid, and these can often be achieved through simply maintaining the recommended daily dosage of folic acid/folate in your diet. In some health situations, however, an increase in the amount of folic acid/folate taken daily can cure or treat many health issues.

There are many foods that contain folic acid, so acquiring the RDA is usually relatively easy. Some foods high in folic acid include leafy green vegetables such as spinach, as well as sunflower seeds. Food high in folate also include dried beans and peas, and other folic acid foods include many fruits and vegetables, and there are many folic acid food sources that are not natural sources of folic acid, but are instead fortified with the vitamin, such as cereals. Other folic acid sources can include vitamin supplements. Among the many types of folic acid/folate pills and tablets available are the ones that are vitamin B12 and folic acid with timed release, to ensure that you receive the proper amounts in equal increments.

A folic acid deficiency can often mirror a vitamin B12 deficiency, but just assuming that it is a lack of folic acid/folate and taking a supplement can be unhealthy. There are dangers of too much folic acid intake, particularly in elderly people. While folic acid/folate can often treat some of the B12 deficiency symptoms, it doesn’t treat others. This is another reason it is important to know exactly what type of deficiency you have before increasing the intake of any particular vitamin. If folic acid is taken too much, it can mask deficiencies of vitamin B12 that can be detrimental if left untreated.

There are many benefits of folic acid/folate, and one of the most well-known folic acid facts is that folic acid needs during pregnancy are increased exponentially. It is a required vitamin for the health of the expectant mother and the unborn child. Folic acid/folate is included in most prenatal vitamins, and is often recommended as a separate supplement for pregnant and breastfeeding women. There are also other benefits of folic acid/folate, including treatment of cancer and heart disease, as well as the prevention of stroke and depression. Depending on the purpose of the treatment, and the severity of the condition, the folic acid/folate amounts needed daily may be increased. It may also be used in conjunction with drugs as a treatment method, and the way the vitamin is administered may be different as well.
