Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 comes from the compound known as cyanocobalamin, and it provides many health benefits to the human body. Among the many vitamin B12 benefits is the formation of healthy blood cells, as well as its assistance in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system. This knowledge alone shows how a vitamin B12 deficiency can be very unhealthy.

The digestion of the B12 vitamin is a complex one, which in turn causes many people to experience a vitamin B12 deficiency. Those with anemia are particularly susceptible to experiencing a deficiency. There are many vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, ranging in severity from sleep difficulties to abnormal functions of the nervous system. Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency should never be ignored because they can lead to severe nervous system problems if left untreated. There are many other affectations of a deficiency of the crucial vitamin B12, and the health of the spleen and vitamin B12 deficiency have often be linked.

In the past, a deficiency of vitamin B12 was treated commonly with vitamin B12 injections. However, this vitamin B12 injection has been studied more carefully over the years and vitamin B12 shots are thought to be the cause of allergies to vitamin B12. Since this determination was made, it has become less often that a vitamin B12 shot will be given to treat a deficiency of the crucial vitamin. However, the shot may still be given, but the vitamin B12 injections dosage may be altered instead. This can help reduce allergies to vitamin B12 while still allowing the patient to quickly overcome the deficiency. Or, a different method of the vitamin B12 may be given as an alternative, such as a vitamin B12 patch or a vitamin B12 liquid. It is important not to take too much vitamin B12 as well, because a vitamin B12 overdose can lead to rashes and itchy skin, diarrhea and more. It is also important to remember that vitamin B12 can often have an interaction with drugs, either causing the vitamin to not be absorbed properly or other difficulties. Alcohol can impair the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 and some antibiotics can bind the vitamin, preventing its absorption. Many other drugs, including prescription drugs as well as other outside factors such as nicotine, can also interfere with the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12, and this will sometimes require the patient to take a B12 supplement while using certain medications.
